What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release is an effective hands-on technique that treats somatic dysfunction to alleviate pain and restriction of motion. This is a form of soft tissue manual therapy technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure on any part of the body into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions. Myofascial Release is highly effective in providing pain relief and improvement of symptoms in a wide range of conditions which result from restrictions in soft tissues.
Many men’s health and women’s health conditions, including of the pelvic floor and related systems are a source of physical and mental discomfort for individuals experiencing them. What is myofascial tissue?
Myofascial tissue is connective tissue that spreads throughout the entire body in a three-dimensional web expanding from your head to your feet without interruption. Myofascial restrictions can result in excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures (bones), and organs. It is not detectable by any special tests such as an MRI or x-ray. Normal fascial tissue has the ability to stretch, to relax, and has a wavy appearance.
Myofascial tissue is not readily visible in standard medical tests therefore, it is important to be evaluated by an experienced physical therapist to determine if your symptoms are due to a myofascial restriction. These restrictions can lead to disorders that present themselves in many ways, including muscle weakness and tightness, and disorders of the digestive and reproductive systems. Many conditions of the pelvic floor and related systems can be successfully treated by Dr. Lauradonna D’Antoni at Body Restoration Physical Therapy of Long Island.
Myofascial tissue can be restricted as a result of injury and scarring, and can cause painful pressure and reduced mobility in certain parts of the body. Body Restoration Physical Therapy utilizes Myofascial Release techniques to relieve symptoms of sexual dysfunction, pelvic floor dysfunction, and other related conditions.
What is a myofascial restriction?
A myofascial restriction is the binding down of fascial tissue that can be created by trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures. It can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on one single nerve. Myofascial restriction might be caused by an accident, injury or surgery, among other causes.
Myofascial Release is a hands-on therapy performed at Body Restoration Physical Therapy which releases these restrictions, allowing the fascia to move freely and normal blood flow to the area to resume. This allows for the natural and effective treatment of common men’s health and women’s health issues including those related to pelvic floor dysfunction.
When fascia become restricted, pain and dysfunction can result. Using gentle and effective hands-on techniques like Myofascial Release, Body Restoration Physical Therapy treats residents of Long Island suffering from pain, weakness, sexual dysfunction and more.

Testimonials
I have had interstitial cystitis with unbearable pain. I had gone to more than five urologists and no one was helping me. Finally, I went to Dr. Figueroa, who told me I needed a Physical Therapist. I thought to myself, “how can a physical therapist help me?” Now, I am so thankful for Lauradonna D’Antoni, DPT. I never thought I would be feeling the way I am today – pain free. If I ever have any type of pelvic floor dysfunction again, physical therapy is the way I will go.
