What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release is an effective hands-on technique that treats somatic dysfunction to alleviate pain and restriction of motion. This is a form of soft tissue manual therapy technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure on any part of the body into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions.  Myofascial Release is highly effective in providing pain relief and improvement of symptoms in a wide range of conditions which result from restrictions in soft tissues.

Many men’s health and women’s health conditions, including of the pelvic floor and related systems are a source of physical and mental discomfort for individuals experiencing them. You do not need to suffer quietly with these symptoms, including sexual dysfunction, painful menstruation, lower back pain, incontinence, constipation, irregular digestion, or other conditions of the pelvic region.

Body Restoration Physical Therapy, located in Nassau County, Long Island, can gently and effectively treat these conditions with proven, hands-on therapies like Myofascial Release. We have improved the quality of life for countless patients and look forward to working together to do the same for you.

What is myofascial tissue?

Myofascial tissue is connective tissue that spreads throughout the entire body in a three-dimensional web expanding from your head to your feet without interruption. Myofascial restrictions can result in excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures (bones), and organs. It is not detectable by any special tests such as an MRI or x-ray. Normal fascial tissue has the ability to stretch, to relax, and has a wavy appearance.

Because disorders of the myofascial tissue are not readily visible in standard medical tests, it is important to be evaluated by an experienced physical therapist to determine if your symptoms are due to a myofascial restriction. These restrictions can lead to disorders that present themselves in many ways, including muscle weakness and tightness, and disorders of the digestive and reproductive systems. Many conditions of the pelvic floor and related systems can be successfully treated by Dr. Lauradonna D’Antoni and Body Restoration Physical Therapy of Long Island.

What is a myofascial restriction?

A myofascial restriction is the binding down of fascial tissue that can be created by trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures. It can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on one single nerve.  Myofascial restriction might be caused by an accident, injury or surgery, among other causes.

Myofascial Release is a hands-on therapy performed by the therapists at Body Restoration Physical Therapy which releases these restrictions, allowing the fascia to move freely and normal blood flow to the area to resume. This allows for the natural and effective treatment of common men’s health and women’s health issues including those related to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Who can Benefit from Myofascial Release?

Any man, women, or child with pain, discomfort, or restrictions from many different health related issues, including pelvic floor dysfunction can benefit from Myofascial Release.

At Body Restoration Physical Therapy, we utilize Myofascial Release to relieve symptoms including painful menstruation, lower back weaknesses, and even chronic headaches caused by imbalances and restrictions in the pelvis.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can affect anyone. Body Restoration Physical Therapy is an inclusive healthcare environment treating men, women, transgender and non-binary individuals suffering with pelvic issues.

I have had interstitial cystitis with unbearable pain. I had gone to more than five urologists and no one was helping me. Finally, I went to Dr. Figueroa, who told me I needed a Physical Therapist. I thought to myself, “how can a physical therapist help me?” Now, I am so thankful for Lauradonna D’Antoni, DPT. I never thought I would be feeling the way I am today – pain free. If I ever have any type of pelvic floor dysfunction again, physical therapy is the way I will go.
